Introduction
The water cycle, also known as the hydrological cycle, is a continuous process by which water moves through the Earth and its atmosphere. This natural cycle plays a vital role in sustaining life and maintaining the planet's ecosystems.
Evaporation and Transpiration
Evaporation occurs when the sun heats up water from rivers, lakes, or oceans, turning it into vapor. Plants also contribute to evaporation through a process called transpiration where water is released from their leaves into the air.
Condensation
Condensation happens when the water vapor rises into the atmosphere and cools down, forming tiny water droplets that create clouds.
Precipitation
When these water droplets grow heavy enough, they fall to the Earth as precipitation. Precipitation can take various forms, such as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
Infiltration and Runoff
Once the water reaches the ground, it either flows over the surface as runoff or soaks into the soil, a process called infiltration. Some of this water replenishes underground reservoirs, known as aquifers.
Collection
Finally, water collects in oceans, rivers, and lakes, completing the cycle. The water cycle ensures that fresh water is continuously available on Earth.
